CTS Introduces New RF Modules for 3G Picocell Applications

Elkhart, IN…CTS Corporation (NYSE:CTS), a leading global provider of electronic components, today announced the introduction of its new series of RF Front End Modules designed for picocell radios and access points. The RoHS compliant module achieves superior filtering and isolation between the transmitter and receiver in a very compact surface mount package. The new modules offer a simple plug-and-play solution that enables radio designers to shorten development cycles while reducing costs.

With the continued rollout of 3G around the world, the demand for high-speed data services and mobile broadband applications requires improved coverage in buildings and other hard to reach areas. CTS’ new VFM1004A Front End Module (Pat. Pending), which incorporates filters, PA, and LNA, is a 24 dBm output power device specifically designed for 3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service) picocells. Picocells are small base stations that extend the WCDMA footprint and “unwire” the office. The market for picocell base stations is expected to grow rapidly through 2010.

The VFM1004A module was developed in partnership with UK-based Deltenna. “We already had the filter and module technology, but we were looking for a partner with expertise in the strict design requirements for a 3G picocell. CTS is extremely pleased with the resulting product,” commented Bret Robertson, Vice President and General Manager of CTS Electronic Components. Managing Director of Deltenna, Andrew Fox, added, “The 3GPP RF specifications are tough, particularly when there is limited space. However, we knew that it could be solved with distributed filtering.”

Compliant with all of the 3GPP specifications (Release 6), the VFM1004A is a fully engineered RF front end module that can deliver 24 dBm power at the antenna port while achieving a typical ACLR (adjacent channel leakage ratio) of –50 dBc with a peak/average ratio of 8 dB. Customers can select different values for receiver sensitivity and output power. The small size of the module (30.5 mm x 25 mm x 6.75 mm) allows manufacturers to further develop compact, low-cost, high performance picocells, which are necessary for 3G applications. CTS’ approach saves substantial engineering time and customer investment in addition to eliminating yield loss by providing pre-screened and guaranteed performance levels.
